Louth progress to All-Ireland knockout stages, Tyrone top group to reach quarter-finals

Sam Mulroy and Ciaran Downey hit crucial first-half goals for Louth as Clare exited.

LEINSTER CHAMPIONS LOUTH enjoyed their first win of the All-Ireland group stages today to progress to next weekend’s preliminary quarter-finals.

Louth saw off Clare by three points in Portlaoise, grateful for goals from Sam Mulroy and Ciaran Downey as they went ahead 2-8 to  0-6 at the break.

Downey starred in that opening period as he struck 1-5, while Mulroy grabbed 1-1. The first goal arrived after 20 minutes courtesy of Mulroy, before Downey netted soon after and then added a two-pointer to push them nine clear.

Clare got an early second-half boost when Rory McMahon netted and then Eoin Cleary’s late goal helped cut the gap Peter Keane’s side faced to four points.

They managed to cut the gap to three on two occasions in the closing stages but Clare couldn’t secure the result they needed to prolong their  championship  with Conor Branigan notching an insurance score for Louth.

TYRONE WERE IN dominant form as they saw off Cavan by 13 points at Brewster Park   in Enniskillen this afternoon.

Malachy O’Rourke’s side earned the prize of top spot in their group, seeing off Donegal on the head-to-head record, and are straight through to the All-Ireland quarter-finals on the weekend of 28-29 June.

Defeated Cavan are back out next weekend in the preliminary quarter-finals, nailing down third spot despite this defeat, as they saw off Mayo on head-to-head to qualify from the group.

Tyrone suffered an early setback with the loss of Michael McKernan through injury but they did welcome Conor Meyler back to action.

Tyrone set their stall out early at they went ahead 0-9 to 0-3 after 21 minutes, and were in front 0-17 to 0-8 at the break. They had stretched in front 0-24 to 0-12 by the three-quarter mark, and had 13 points to spare at the end.

Darren McCurry, Darragh Canavan, and Mattie Donnelly struck 0-18 between them for Tyrone, while Paddy Lynch top-scored for Cavan with 0-9.
